Proklaim – JITTER (2024)
With an eagerness to convey meaningful messages through music, singer-songwriter Proklaim explores the hip-hop genre discovering profoundness and, simultaneously, laidback comfort with each beat. The brainchild of Namibian Birungi Alexander Kiremire, Proklaim has kept us enthralled for approximately two years; however, his charm reached far beyond our speakers for several years beforehand. Join us as we delve into his latest single, ‘JITTER’.
While our reviews ended with the 2024 single ‘Mimosa’ – a song exploring the state of being and enjoying the present – ‘JITTER’ follows the well-received singles ‘PROSPERITY’ and ‘CALL’. Rounding the year off with flair, ‘JITTER’ was recorded in November 2024 with mixing and mastering by Audio Art Namibia’s Wojtek Majewski. A sophisticated piece of work, the new song’s composition is an interweaving of hip-hop, rap and hits of RnB in the melody.
Similar to previous songs, such as ‘CALL’, there is a strong leaning toward 90s rap ala Dr Dre and Tupac; however, ‘JITTER’ offers something not heard in much of Proklaim’s music – a strong, clear, exclusively spoken word addition. Rich vocals rap within the hip-hop melody; but it is the movement from a rollercoaster of music to an individual chatting about their beliefs that brings poignant depth to ‘JITTER’.
In three minutes of music, Proklaim traipses a trapezium of genres and emotions with a rollercoaster-style effect. Interestingly, while the highs and lows of ‘JITTER’ ebb and flow through the melody, there are underlying sentimentalities offering a somewhat intriguing obscurity. Confident and calm, but with brash, haunting undertones, ‘JITTER’ has optimism and self-empowerment coupled with vulnerability and fragility.
“It’s a high-energy song that focuses on faith and not being perturbed by the current music zeitgeist and staying true to one’s own beliefs even when it might have costs…” – Proklaim on ‘JITTER’
So, what is my overall opinion of ‘JITTER’? Already being a fan of Proklaim, I might be a bit biased… then again, perhaps my eagerness to dissect his music might offer a not-all-that-biased review. Proklaim is, once again, fascinating and ‘JITTER’ may be one of his most fascinating songs to date. I am eager to hear more from Proklaim, but I’ll be quite content to enjoy this single until another one comes along.
