Project Twin – Si(Gemini) (2023)

Reaching our shores from a planet far away, the extra-terrestrial duo Ike and Spike assimilate into our culture with enthusiasm, energy and some cautiousness. Making their home in Toronto, Canada, the pair (who are referred to as Project Twin) come in peace but learn about life on Earth the difficult way. Eager to answer various existential questions, Ike and Spike explore humanity facing the rollercoaster of reality from challenging emotions to being part of the rat race we call civilised society. Gifted with natural talent as musicians, they use art as a form of helping, healing and coping with their discoveries. Enter the debut single ‘Si(Gemini)’.

Blending elements of what we refer to as alternative rock and pop-punk with a flamenco twist, Project Twin stand out amidst their peers. I’m not saying they have three heads or anything like that. No, it is their exceptional knowledge of musical composition fusing hard-hitting sounds with a hip-swaying, smile-inducing, hand-pumping flair. I mean it, even Shakira’s hips won’t lie when twirling about with Latin enthusiasm to ‘Si(Gemini)’.

With pounding drums matching scorching guitars and a sliver of acoustic Spanish charm, Project Twin oscillate between the grungy depths of rock to the hyped boldness of pop-punk. Interestingly, while all the instruments come together harmonically, each element has prominence as multi-instrumentalist Spike forces you to pay attention to every detail. Weave Ike’s rich vocals into this melodic tapestry and you have a song to ensnare senses and win souls.

The melody can leave you in a kaleidoscopic whirlpool of sound twirling about in a deliriously euphoric mood, but it is the lyricism that shows true depth as an artist. Laying bare their vulnerability and fragility, the thumping tune endears itself to the confusion, frustration and angst of complex romance. Vocalist Ike explains, “This song tells the story of finding yourself in a situation where you identify that a romantic partner may not be what’s best for you, yet it’s so hard to leave.”

Shouting out in a frustrated rage of inner conflict, ‘Si(Gemini)’ is not a song to hear and sing along. No, it is one to feel and experience entirely.
