Prïnceps – Oh So Fun! (2020)

After debuting in 2018 with the electropop ‘Already Forgotten You’, Prïnceps were at the beginning of an interesting career. Eclectic and experimental, this London-based duo have dabbled at pop-driven sounds, synth-heavy melodies, leanings toward grunge, and now melodic metal. Moving from the smoother, steadier synth-driven singles from 2019, vocalist Renz Byrne and bassist Press I.M. embrace the “screamo” with 2020 singles ‘Nostalgia’ and ‘Oh So Fun!’

Unlike ‘Nostalgia’, ‘Oh So Fun’ is more vulnerable, raw, and excitable in its presentation. Byrne shows true skill traipsing several octaves with a movement from powerful rock vocals to frenzied screams. Combine Bert McCracken (The Used) with Corey Taylor (Stone Sour) and you will have some idea of what to expect from Byrne; however, I think he might give them a run for their money. This is particularly true when Byrne effortlessly weaves along with the bass and synths throughout ‘Oh So Fun’.

Despite being an explosive track with unreserved vocals, synths, bass and drums, there seems to be a sense of stability in ‘Oh So Fun’. A strange combination of brash and piercing with a degree of melodic continuity makes it less jarring but still uncontrollable. Fusing the crazy with the creepily comfortable, ‘Oh So Fun’ is four minutes of organised chaos and I love every second!
