Pranatricks – Cobras (2024)
For almost two decades, singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Pranatricks has ensnared audiences with his unique blend of music. An established act on the Canadian independent music scene, Pranatricks shifts from one sound to another flitting across folk, funk, indie-rock and psychedelic pop. Rarely remaining on a single sound, his genre-defying nature highlights the desire to constantly find something new with nostalgic flairs. This is my introduction to Pranatricks, but he has already turned heads across the globe with his intoxicating music.
Following his well-received debut album Cherished, released in 2023, Pranatricks is working his way to the sophomore album Elements Of. To release Elements Of in April 2024, the Canada-based musician is giving us a taste of this new sound with each passing month. Unlike his critically acclaimed Cherished, Pranatricks introduces audiences to a more eclectic sound with his singles – an indication of his evolution in sound. ‘Cobras’ is the sixth track off Elements Of.
Unlike the previous singles ‘Worlds’, ‘Birds and the Bees’ and ‘Johnny Self’, ‘Cobras’ steps away from vintage folk with a psychedelic blast. Retaining the sincerity of folk lyricism and tenderness, a lilt toward Fleetwood Mac underlies the melody; however, a brasher and heavier tone overtakes any indie-folk leanings. A psychedelic twirl of art rock, listening to ‘Cobras’ is like being set adrift on a tempestuous sonic river. The surface is glassy but beneath is a swirl of angsty anxiety with gritty scratches in a depressed mire of sound.
A combination of screeching guitars, psychedelic synths and heavy beats, it is difficult to emerge from the foggy soundscape without kaleidoscopic melancholy clinging to each pore. The thing is, while a chaotic swarm of sound exists, there is a tenderness and warmth in ‘Cobras’. Pranatricks explains:
“’Cobras’ is a metaphor for the ability to open our hearts. Like a cobra snake that lifts from the ground and puffs out its chest, the song references the action of expansion and suggests that there is power in understanding that the heart when exposed, can connect us to a universal energy that surrounds all things…”
