Pork Pie – Careful As You Go (2024)

While the band Pork Pie has been sharing their music with the world for four years (give or take), the band members have been in the music industry for a while – might we call them veterans? Combining their influences, styles, skills and experience, the Irish band Pork Pie is a melting pot of musical madness. Releasing their debut album Pterodactyl in 2021, Michael Stafford (vocals, piano, guitar and alto saxophone), Peter Laverty (lead guitar), Michael Laverty (bass) and Shane Brett (drums) turned heads internationally with critical acclaim. Bold and confident, their enthusiasm on the album matched the energy of their live performances bringing a fist-pumping fullness to listeners everywhere.

Known for their “contemporary alternative eclectic rock”, Pork Pie licks various flavours of rock building a truly original sound. While 2023’s ‘City Lights’ built a bridge between old-school indie rock and classic rock, ‘Careful As You Go’ adopts a harder, heavier blend of indie rock and grunge littered with the insanity of punk. Recorded in 2023 at Dundalks Lockup Recording Studio with Pete Rust and mastered by Fergal Davis, ‘Careful As You Go’ jumps up and bites you with its raw production; yet simultaneously there is precision to the composition and production. A case of calculated intricacy enveloped by a chaotic swirl of rock anarchy – organised chaos, if you will.

For almost four minutes, Pork Pie gives us pounding drums with scorching guitars matched by Laverty’s gritty vocals. Dipping and diving, you are sent across a kaleidoscopic pool of ice hoping you stay on course and alive but intrigued by the potential doom. Interestingly, amidst the craziness splices of horns pierce the melody oozing a unique laidback groove. Expertly layering grit and grunge with smooth sensuality, ‘Careful As You Go’ is a shot to the head but with a rich grasp of your heart.
