Pochenski – Bloodlines (2021)

If U2 were to have a child with Radiohead, but it was raised by Architects, then Pochenski might be it. Forming in 2019, Daniel Pye (vocals and guitar), Kieran Joyce (bass and guitar) and George Coleman (drums) started sharing their powerful tunes with the masses. Already a known act to The Other Side Reviews, Pochenski has also featured on It’s All Indie, Gig Goer, Chalkpit Records and various online radio stations. The latest addition to their repertoire is the single ‘Bloodlines’.

After performing for several years with other bands, the Manchester-based group explores experimental alternative rock styles. Following the smooth ballad ‘No Answers’ (read our review here), ‘Bloodlines’ is heavier, harder and more gut-wrenching…in a good way. Pounding drums combine with dynamic guitars tossing you into a kaleidoscopic whirlpool of music. Just as the melodic arrangement is “all over the place”, there is a cleverness to the mixture of instrumentation and vocals with well-placed dips and rises.

With bold sounds, catchy choruses and high-paced riffs, Pochenski achieves an earth-shattering state in its melody. Yet, it is the apt alignment between the vocal execution and sonic momentum that makes ‘Bloodlines’ evocative. Described by the group as being “about acceptance”, ‘Bloodlines’ has a reflective, sincere and insightfulness to it; however, it is the chaotic side that makes the track boundary-breaking. Adopting a form of controlled chaos, there is lingering empowerment behind the gruffness and grittiness.

Walking the line between delicate fragility and brash boldness, ‘Bloodlines’ is a true piece of art. While this is only their third release, Pochenski showcase maturity and sophistication in their music. I can’t wait for more.
