Plasma Chasms – Solaris (2024)
Drawing together the flavours of Australia and the USA, Aussie Jane Drewett and American Adrian Guerrero blend their diverse culture and backgrounds in Plasma Chasms. Formed in 2020 when “Adrian returned to writing music after a hiatus from fronting several different bands and genres…”, the duo stuff hazy dream-pop, psychedelic synth-pop, heavier pop-rock and eclectic indie-pop into a jar, shake it about and let the contents spill into their melodies with a mind-bending rush of kaleidoscopic experimentalism. Following their single ‘Psychedelic Carousel’, Plasma Chasms release the new track ‘Solaris’.
The second single off the pair’s upcoming debut album, ‘Solaris’ weaves together aspects of disco with vintage jangle-pop bubbling beneath. With a hypnotic blend of twinkling synths and bold beats, Guerrero and Drewett breathe life into nostalgic psychedelia dragged straight out of the 1960s and 1970s. Interestingly, while the psychedelic keys and synths swirl about with wistful vocals offering a smooth slide of haziness, there is a slight brashness lingering with vulnerable complexity.
For me, listening to Plasma Chasms is an experience not only a song. Immersing yourself in the kaleidoscopic sonic waves, you travel along breathing in the vivid shininess of the world. Toe-tapping and upbeat… alright, maybe not toe-tapping because the song is that chilled you twirl not tap, ‘Solaris’ oozes empowerment, hope and optimism in the charming melody. Plasma Chasms explain:
“Inspired by the desire to create an upbeat and happy sunshiny song, we set out to create an opposite feeling to the one that’s permeated the last few years. Something hopeful and uplifting… Thematically it talks of letting loose and embracing open-mindedness and positivity…”
