Planets – Winner (2025)
With only a few months and a couple of singles beneath their belt, one might consider the duo Planets to hold “newbie” status. The thing is, despite the short time – having only formed in mid-2024 – Hector Castro (guitar) and Charlotte King (vocals) are reaching far beyond their UK borders. This is my introduction to Planets, as I’m sure it will be the same for most, but there is something familiar, unique and charming in their sound; it makes me feel I’ve known them for ages instead of playing their music for the first time.
Following the critically acclaimed ‘Red Earth’ and ‘SIGNS’, Planets step into 2025 with the new single ‘Winner’. Based on the previous singles, one might consider the pair to fall into an indie-rock realm of music if we really had to attach a label. Yet, as much as there is an indie flavour to Planets, ‘Winner’ shows us a heavier side of their sonic personality.
In a bold combination of crashing drums and soaring vocals, Planets tosses you into a dark whirlpool of hard-hitting alternative rock sound. A nostalgic piece, 90s alt-rock flutters across the walls of music; however, ‘Winner’ would sit comfortably on more contemporary rock playlists as well. King’s vocals wind about you in a kaleidoscopic haze, but there is a vivid vibrancy harkening from her powerful tones. Interestingly, while ‘Winner’ has a melody of subdued chaos and urgency, its lyricism leans toward empowerment, optimism and self-confidence. Castro explains:
“’Winner’ is intended to motivate people like me, who’ve been too afraid to put the work in and fight for what they really want in life. There are many points of inspiration for this song, but we just really hope it gives listeners more confidence in themselves and what they’re capable of…”
Given the difference to ‘SIGNS’ and ‘Red Earth’, ‘Winner’ showcases the grittier, rougher, more alternative rock side of Planets. As this is only their third release, might it be Planets showcasing the diversity of their rock-tinted sound? Perhaps ‘Winner’ is a one-off, and we’re yet to hear more indie-rock singles. Either way, I am very excited about the duo and cannot wait for more from this highly recommended band!
