Pistols At Dawn – Not Sorry (2024)
Technically, the alternative rock group Pistols At Dawn was formed in 2015 with Devin White (guitar), Billy Sullivan (bass), Adam Jaffe (drums), and deceased guitarist Mike Buffa. The Pistols At Dawn reaching our ears today is not the official line-up, but the 2019 addition of vocalist Cris Hodges and guitarist Tommy Richardson to fill out its sound. A few years back, the US-based group turned our heads with their hard-hitting, rambunctious, soul-stirring brand of hard rock meets alternative rock. Review-wise we might have left our pens in the inkwell, but the group was never far from our rock music list. Today, we look at their single, ‘Not Sorry’.
Following their 2023 take on WHAM’s iconic ‘Last Christmas’, Pistols At Dawn released ‘Not Sorry’. Recorded and produced with Jason Mater, ‘Not Sorry’ dissolves the soothing rock sounds heard in ‘Last Christmas’ fusing it with a “hit you in the gut” attitude. A kaleidoscopic concoction of Jaffe’s pounding drums, Richardson and White’s soaring guitars, and Sullivan’s bold bass seem to draw you into a kaleidoscopic sonic whirlpool. Interestingly, as much as the song is a sophisticated composition with Mater’s magical fairy dust infusing maturity and elegance into ‘Not Sorry’, a sense of gruffness lurks within the dark pool.
For me, ‘Not Sorry’ is a fierce drag back to vintage alt-rock circa late 90s/early 2000s; a dose of yesteryear clasped with a band of modern-day brashness. The melody itself is intimate and intense, so you lose your head in its hypnotic swirl; however, its lyricism and theme give it a certain sincerity… sort of. The “ultimate break-up anthem…”, this moving, evocative and intriguing tune sees you crying but with the blissful relief of screaming your heart out to overcome the pain.
In addition to the single, Pistols At Dawn released an official music video for ‘Not Sorry’. You can view the video below or on their YouTube channel.
