Piper Page – Serious (2024)
Consider the moment when a simple flirtatious, potentially one-night stand situation goes wrong, and you suddenly have someone who wants more in the relationship. Piper Page captures the frustration, stress and “bloody hell, leave me alone…” attitude in her new single ‘Serious’. While ‘Serious’ is the most recent relationship-relevant single to hit our ears, the US-based singer-songwriter bravely wades through the waters of modern dating, travelling, and living as a young adult in the 21st century in her music. Self-described as the “bad bitch with commitment issues”, each track is a personal narrative connecting with audiences on an intimate level. So, come join me as we delve into the most recent addition to her discography, ‘Serious’.
From her 2019 self-titled EP to the 2022 single ‘Do You Want Me Or Not?’, and her 2024 track ‘Attentionship’, Page has shifted from vulnerable youthful innocence to a sophisticated, mature and elegant attitude. Along with ‘Attentionship’, ‘Serious’ presents a rich pop flavour sliced with a 90s RnB style reaching audiences across decades. Interestingly, the fusion of retro and contemporary is perfectly aligned with the age-old theme of commitment issues. Page explains:
“Simply put, this song is “hot girl summer”. I wrote it in the middle of the summer nearly two years ago while dating around and decided to incorporate some of the funny experiences I had into this song. This song is about not being tied down by potential partners… and the desire to just date with no expectations…”
Recorded and produced by Hunna G and Nick Axel Kauffman, with mixing by Jake Mannix and mastering by Gabri Grella, ‘Serious’ is a twirl of bold beats, slick synths and full-bodied vocals. In its rambunctious nature, listening to ‘Serious’ is like stepping into a kaleidoscopic swirl of music. Rushes of shimmering red and gold slip past one ear while glittering greens and yellow wiggle in the tune; however, just as ‘Serious’ has a hint of chaos, Page’s voice acts like an anchor offering clarity in the dance-floor-ready tune.
