Piper Cole – Gravity (2023)
A classically trained soprano, Piper Cole blends her forceful pipes with acoustic folk and contemporary electronica creating something, well, rather unique. We last took a gander at the Canada-based Cole in 2021 with her single ‘Soul Eyes’, but she was already captivating audiences as a singer-songwriter for at least a year beforehand. From her 2019 debut album Wildish to her 2022 single ‘Oh Honey’, Cole has received critical acclaim on a global scale reaching far beyond her North American borders. The latest addition to her discography is the single ‘Gravity’.
As a long-time psychotherapist, Piper Cole is inspired by humanity and the human condition. Known for her honest, introspective singles, she taps into the effects of struggles on people delicately embracing their fragility. ‘Gravity’ is a journey inward with Cole touching on her personal reaction to the challenges of society. Penned during a time when the world was bogged with uncertainty and despair, ‘Gravity’ picks up a torch confronting the negative with some positivity. Cole explains, “I wanted to write a song that made me feel happy inside when I heard it…”
Poetic lyricism captures your heart drawing you into a warm embrace; however, it is the melodic arrangement that truly holds you close. Exploring the realm of synth-pop, Cole placed her folktronica tunes aside for something smoother, gentler and more soothing but with a bouncy beat. As an uplifting genre, a sweetness exists in the melody perfectly representing the need to move away from bleak, dreary thoughts to an optimistic place. Cole might sing that “one way or another we need to fall”, however, submitting to the force of gravity isn’t always bad. Instead of leaving us helpless, we learn from the bruises, find the courage to carry on and are transformed.
Written, recorded, and produced by Piper Cole, with the help of Daniel Klenner (mixing) and Brock McFarlane (mastering), ‘Gravity’ is an honest, sincere, tender and sentimental single. I cannot wait to hear what else this talented artist has in store.
