Pio Hartnett – Grand Prix (2022)

Despite trying to avoid being a musician for several years, singer-songwriter Pio Hartnett found himself sharing natural musical talent with the masses. Described by Kieran Webber of CLUNK Magazine as “gut-wrenching yet positive”, Hartnett’s music has an intimate profoundness that connects with audiences on a deeper level. While he only began releasing material this year, he is already receiving international acclaim from Latin Post, Edgar Allan Poets, Rock Era Magazine, Pop Fad Blog and many more. The latest addition to his repertoire is ‘Grand Prix’.

Following his debut track ‘Roses’ (read our review here), ‘Grand Prix’ is an enchanting combination of folk and pop music. Unlike the smooth, mellow single ‘Roses’, Hartnett inserts dynamic guitars with low thudding drums to create an eclectic arrangement. With a beautifully textured sound, there is an obscurity to the different drumming styles; however, Hartnett is able to steady the song with his rich vocals. An innovative piece, ‘Grand Prix’ tries to incite exciting new vibes within a laidback soundscape.

While the melody can certainly keep you entertained, it is the lyrical depth that highlights his depth as an artist. Using a personal narrative, he shares memories with listeners enhancing a sense of nostalgia in ‘Grand Prix’. Hartnett explains that ‘Grand Prix’ is reflective looking at people’s opinion of him and how being away from the stifling “school environment” brought clarity and freedom.

“Going to a new place or meeting someone who has this power to inspire something in you – that helps me find something new and go into another gear. So, it’s about that in a way.” – Pio Hartnett on ‘Grand Prix’.

While there is a melancholic tinge to the single, ‘Grand Prix’ is introspective, sentimental and sincere. Taken from his upcoming debut EP set for release later this year, ‘Grand Prix’ is one of those songs that will stick in your head forever…or at least for a few months.
