Pib – All 2 Much (2020)

Hailing from Battle Creek, Michigan, Pib is a one-man-band taking on all genres and breaking boundaries with his unique sound. The US-based artist has not always been on his own. In fact, he played the guitar in several bands throughout high school, but Pib discovered that a solo project was his destiny. Influenced by various styles, including indie-rock, hip-hop and experimental rock, this talented singer-songwriter illustrates innovativeness and originality in his music. The latest release from Pib is the single ‘All 2 Much’.

Recorded and produced in Pib’s home studio (also known as his bedroom), ‘All 2 Much’ is a step out of the 1980s with synth-laden pop and post-punk undertones. Reminiscent of The Cure, The Smiths, Joy Division and New Order, the single uses an eclectic mixture of dynamic instrumentation with Pib’s hip-hop-influenced vocals. However, while one can pick out different genre-influences throughout the single, it is the incorporation of everything into five minutes that truly showcases versatility and flexibility as an artist.

According to Pib, ‘All 2 Much’ touches on transition, change and making difficult life-changing decisions about one’s future. He stands at the crossroads of life and considers all elements before growing or falling – ‘All 2 Much’ is the sonic representation of this sombre concept. The synth-driven quality of the single does hold constant throughout the track; however, it is the overall transition from uplifting post-punk to commercial rap-rock that enhances the intensity of the core theme.

Unlike anything I have heard before, ‘All 2 Much’ is one that lingers in your mind long after you stop listening. Evocative, compelling and slightly beguiling, Pib bores into your brain and triggers deep emotions with complete ease. I look forward to his future work.
