Phonix – The Little Things (2022)
Lying somewhere between the intimate folk sound of Joni Mitchell to the grungy Radiohead or dance beats of Calvin Harris, US-based Phonix is a cacophony of influences melded into one unique style. Formed – can you say formed for a solo artist – anyway, formed in 2021 this is not the first time Phonix has crossed our virtual desk. Along with international blogs like Pop Fad Blog, Indie O Clock and Rock Era Magazine, we at The Other Side Reviews have been impressed by the multi-instrumentalist’s musicality. The latest addition to his discography is the single ‘The Little Things’.
Following his debut single ‘I’m The One’, singer-songwriter Phonix adopts a more rock-inspired tone in ‘The Little Things’. Unlike his debut track, the sophomore single removes the tinges of electronica allowing for a simplistic combination of guitars and drums. I could say ‘The Little Things’ lies somewhere between Train and Matchbox Twenty, but it appears to have some country-rock edginess that makes it unique. What I do know for sure is its soothing vibe can effortlessly get toes tapping and mouths grinning.
A group project, Phonix calls ‘The Little Things’ a real “team effort”. Bringing the talents of bassist James Cook and drummer Kent Sluchner to the table of producers Phil Campbell (mixing) and Brandon Allshouse (mastering), ‘The Little Things’ really is the result of a beautiful collaboration. The lyrics, however, are beautiful but a little darker than the light-hearted tune.
Just as his single ‘I’m The One’ connects with listeners on an intimate and personal level, so does ‘The Little Things’. Phonix explains that “the song is about how what we think is a small thing in a relationship can be big to the other person and, over time, it can develop into a huge wall between you and the other person…I hope my music is like an AA meeting where I share myself working through my problems and people can be inspired to work through their own issues…”
Sincere, sentimental and heart-warming in its honesty, ‘The Little Things’ is a song I recommend to any and all audiences.
