Phonix – I’m The One (2022)
Influenced by the likes of Radiohead, Calvin Harris, David Guetta and Dave Matthews Band, US-based Phonix lies somewhere in the sea of grungy, mind-blowing psychedelic sound. A one-man band formed in 2021, Phonix is a relatively new artist in the music scene; however, he is by no means a shy wallflower. Featured in Pop Fad Blog, Rocker A Mag, Indie O Clock and various playlists/online radio stations, the multi-instrumentalist is quickly building a loyal following. Come with us as we look at his debut single ‘I’m The One’.
Recorded in his apartment kitchen (or home studio), ‘I’m The One’ is a melding of contemporary pop and indie-pop with dustings of electronica. The slow, steady and enchanting arrangement is carefully layered revealing a heartfelt tune only eclipsed by Phonix’s vocals. Yes, the track is rich, warm and tips you into a powerful swirl of sound; however, it is the content that showcases Phonix’s depth as an artist.
Touching on issues of isolation, anxiety, inner conflict and the fragility of human spirits, ‘I’m The One’ is described as a “…song about limiting beliefs and realising that they are there and that we are the ones that are in our way sometimes”. Phonix also explains that the track looks at acceptance and a “…need to get out of the way and stop it with the self-sabotage.” – a sonic representation of dealing with existential angst.
While there is a strong intimate connection in the storytelling narrative, it is the personal connection that makes ‘I’m The One’ prolific. In a soothing manner, Phonix takes us on a journey through his difficult experiences and hopes to inspire people to “work through their own issues too.” Sentimental, sincere and honest, the single highlights how important communication and self-understanding actually is.
