Philipp Reise – Better Days (2024)
While this might be the first time I hear Philipp Reise, the Germany-based singer-songwriter and producer is no newbie in the music industry. In 2021, he began to emerge on the dance scene singing for EDM producers on viral hits ‘I’ll Be Around’ and ‘Find You’. From there his musical journey continued as he delved into various styles of pop and electronic music. Skip ahead a couple of years, and Reise reaches my ears with his new single ‘Better Days’.
I might mention that Philipp Reise leans toward electronic pop, but he is not to be pigeonholed in any way. From commercial pop to alternative pop, synths and electronica, Reise tinkers with various genres building an eclectic concoction of sound. Following his well-received EP Someone Better, ‘Better Days’ takes things down a step with soothing, gentle, calm rushes of indie-pop.
While the track is mellifluous and intimate, Reise highlights his innovativeness with a “rollercoaster effect”. From comfortable lulls to heart-stirring highs then the emotional plummet before easing out with another comfortable lull, ‘Better Days’ is a sonic oscillation between forceful and tranquil. For me, however, this cohesive collision of composed chaos spills over from the music to the lyrics.
Inspired by life in its totality, Philipp Reise is unafraid to reach into the grittier areas of, well, life. So, brimming with vulnerability from the delicate piano to the eerie haunting strings, all pulsating with a bold beat, ‘Better Days’ tackles human fragility. Then again, amidst the wistful, gut-wrenching poignancy, there is hope, optimism and empowerment. Reise explains:
“My new single is all about never giving up and helping somebody to finally reach “better days” after going through hard times. I also wrote it as a message to myself. There’s something really positive, yet still melancholic in the song…”
Sincere, sentimental, reflective and innovative, Philip Reise unfolds raw emotion in his new single ‘Better Days’. It’s a bit cringe-worthy, but my day just became better after listening to ‘Better Days’ – I bet yours will too.
