Philip La Rosa – The Impossible (2025)
Philip La Rosa is an Australian singer who has been putting out music since 2016, when he released the single ‘Pride’ and followed it up with the EP, Strong. He released a steady stream of singles until 2023. Now in 2025, he is releasing his new single, ‘The Impossible’. While new, it is technically an old song. ‘The Impossible’ breathes new life into his song, ‘Edge of Greatness’, which appeared on the Strong EP. Reuniting with The Banton Brothers, who produced Strong, La Rosa takes another look at the older song.
On his website, he writes about the passing of time and returning to this song: “It’s wild to think about how much has changed since then, but somehow, bringing this song back to life with the boys after a decade feels like a full circle moment.” It sounds like a full circle moment as well. In the intervening decade, La Rosa has grown in his confidence as an artist and a singer. ‘Edge of Greatness’ is a good tune with La Rosa sounding clean and young. On ‘The Impossible’, you can hear his age in the best way possible.
He sings with more confidence. His tone is well-rounded, and he expresses the kind of presence and power that comes through grace and experience. On ‘Edge of Greatness’, his voice, while not bad by any stretch, has an edge to it that softens on ‘The Impossible’, allowing him greater dynamic control. As the focal point of the song, La Rosa’s voice is a big win. As a pop vocalist should, he carries the emotional resonance and guides the listener through the turmoil of doubt to the victory of the chorus.
The setting for ‘The Impossible’ is not an innovation over the ‘Edge of Greatness’ as much as it is a freshening up. It revamps the sound, incorporating some string elements and a lot more bass. The downside is that many of the nuances, such as the bowed and plucked string sounds, appear and then drown in the muddiness. Fortunately, La Rosa’s voice shines over it.
