PG Naylor – Eyes On The Moon (2023)

Blasting from the 60s with classic rock, PG Naylor (who happened to be there when it all began) brings a nostalgic flair to old and new audiences. Having played in various rock bands since the 60s, Australian singer-songwriter PG Naylor could be considered a music veteran, and he’s still here to spread the love. After a life in the corporate world (a fleeting step if you consider the expanse of time), the old-school rocker returned to “his first love – 60s rock music – his lifeblood and that of the entire baby boomer generation…”

With a reputation for hard-hitting, energetic shows as a solo artist and part of the band The Quiet Ones who are committed to raising funds for charities, Phil (PG) Naylor is garnering a loyal following not only across Australia but on an international level. Alongside the rave reviews and playlist adds, his single ‘Sanctuary’ was announced as a semi-finalist in the 2019 International Songwriting Competition. ‘Sanctuary’ and ‘Hollywood Road’ were also announced as semi-finalists in the 2020 Voyager International Songwriting Competition. We’re taking a gander at his most recent addition to his discography, ‘Eyes On The Moon’.

A collaborative single with guitarist Kim Humphreys and producer John Ray, ‘Eyes On The Moon’ surely kicks you back to the sounds of yesteryear. Bold and robust, the melody brings a slice of the British Invasion bands with slips of The Beatles and The Kinks flitting through the tune. Yet, while mild comparisons can be made to the iconic 60s bands, Naylor inserts a charming uniqueness in his vintage but contemporary single.

On one hand, ‘Eyes On The Moon’ has soothing sophistication in its arrangement and execution; however, a gritty rawness weaves its way through the track. With one fell swoop, the crashing drums met a wave of scorching guitars – but all in a smooth sonic wrapper. Leaving you truly stumped at the awesomeness of its toe-tapping, soul-stirring sound but also gazing at a mellifluous flow, ‘Eyes On The Moon’ hits you in the heart while holding you in a warm embrace. Oddly enough, the single might be flowing but the theme is contrary – “It’s war, the battle has begun, who is the enemy, who’s a traitor?”
