Petra Jasmiina – Summer Dress (2023)
Embracing her passion for music early in life, singer-songwriter and producer Petra Jasmiina was writing lyrics as a 9-year-old. Oddly enough, while she was born in Finland, she was penning poetry in foreign English from day one. Skip forward to her mid-twenties and we find Jasmiina in New York City prepared to pursue a music career. After living in various countries across the globe, it is in NYC’s indie music scene where she established herself as a unique voice in a mass of artists. A confident stage presence garnered followers at various legendary venues, but she turns heads across the globe with her critically acclaimed releases. From North America to Europe and beyond, award-winning Jasmiina has received rave reviews, placed on various playlists and earned airtime on global radios. The latest addition to her discography is the single ‘Summer Dress’.
Known for her soulful storytelling, Jasmiina blends elements of folk, pop and electronica to share these moving tales. Following her well-received track ‘Jackie O Lake’, Jasmiina oscillates between light and dark sounds in the cinematic ‘Summer Dress’. Airy and light with her breathless hushed vocals, Jasmiina captures your heart as a siren in the mystical melody. Twinkling and shimmering the almost spoken-word voice ensnares your senses from the get-go.
While Jasmiina’s voice is the light, the acoustic instrumentation is the dark. Bold beats lurk in the background with classical intricacy holding it in place; however, the soaring acoustic guitar (courtesy of Finnish jazz guitarist Olli Hirvonen) splits between the airy brightness and poignant depths of ‘Summer Dress’ – a silvery thread piercing both sides of the romantic coin.
The melody is moving but it is Jasmiina’s poetic words that reach into one’s soul. Jasmiina shares that “This is one of my favourite songs I’ve ever written. I’m immensely proud of its poetic lyrics that paint such a visceral world around them, one of a balmy summer city with delicious duality between soft and dark, romantic and brutal, heavenly and hellish, just like a whirlwind summer romance…” Sincere, sentimental and filled with raw emotion, ‘Summer Dress’ is a simple song easily played in the background but holds the ferocity of raw heartbreak in its tender tones.
