Peter Stone – Fells Reservoir (2020)

Relationships often have a transitory nature, but this does not stop the fear of loss we feel when there is a chance of the relationship breaking down. Peter Stone has wonderfully captured the emotions of this in his single ‘Fells Reservoir’. Through the moving soundscape, he considers the want for the comfort and optimism of a relationship to last only for it to be tempered by the acceptance of the fragility of these attachments.

The single has been around since 2014 in one form or another after being conceived while on a solitary hike in the Fells. The power of a walk through the forest on a summer’s day is felt through the music as the winds of the single carry you through the emotional tumbles. Carrying Stone’s unique blend of alternative and folk music, the single will leave you reflective and wanting more.

The guitar opening of ‘Fells Reservoir’ takes you out of the urban sprawl and into nature. There is something about the melody that makes you think of the light glinting off water and a gentle breeze ruffling the tree leaves. The flowing pace of the opening melody gives way when the vocals hit for a softer undertone. This picks up again to get you moving along the melody. The music provides an optimistic feeling full of warmth.

Stone’s vocals have a slightly rough edge that adds to the power of the melody. Through his performance, you are filled with the emotions of the track. Resting on the optimism of the melody is a sadness of a loss of comfort. However, this turns into an acceptance of the transitory nature of relationships and emotions. The lyrics have a wonderful mixture of sadness and hope tinted with fragility.

Peter Stone transports you to the forests for a walk through the transitory nature of emotions and relationships in ‘Fells Reservoir’. The single has an optimistic melody tempered by the sadness in the lyrics. Stone’s vocals carry an emotional weight that is countered by fragility and acceptance of the nature of emotions.
