Pete Coppard – You Will… (2023)

Beginning as an 11-year-old pounding the drums, singer-songwriter Pete Coppard found a love for music early on. Now, quite a few years later, he has been sharing his natural talent with audiences for closing in on 20 years. He began “writing music properly” in 2006 and has performed in a number of tribute acts for the last 14 years, but today we listen to something completely original and fully Pete Coppard. The latest addition to his discography is the single ‘You Will…’

Following his well-received full-length album This Is This, which showcases Coppard’s genre-diversity from electronic instrumental ‘Arcadia Electronica’ to the funky ‘Dancing On My Own’, Coppard shifts to a softer, more soothing tone in ‘You Will…’. Self-recorded and produced by Coppard at his home studio, ‘You Will…’ is a nostalgic glance at the days of 90s grunge.

Tossing you into a hazy swirl of drums and guitars, Coppard creates a haunting soundscape in which you can lose yourself. His simplistic vocals traipse across the gloom of music with absolute ease. Yet, while there is a soothing tone to ‘You Will…’, the vibe is far more tumultuous. Lurking beneath the calm is vulnerability and frustration waiting to break forth but in a subtle and sincere way. One aspect I adore in ‘You Will…’ is the inclusion of a piano. It seems to bring a laidback charm, as well as a haunting glow.

While ‘You Will…’ would likely have taken a long time to hone and perfect, Coppard shares, “the song came about very quickly, just jamming at home”. Perhaps it is this simple jamming that contributes to the rawness within an elegant single. Then again, the rawness and fragility might come from the fact that it is “a simple ballad of unrequited love…”

Exploring the delicate vulnerability of humans in a melancholic, sentimental and brutally honest song, ‘You Will…’ will seep into your soul. I cannot wait for more from this talented musician.
