Peppermint Moon – Foxy Friends (2022)

After watching a documentary on the Sex Pistols and too much cable TV in general, Peppermint Moon wrote and recorded ‘Foxy Friends’. A blast of glam rock infused with alternative rock sensibilities, the single is a kick to your senses, in the best possible way. Packed with melodic hooks and rocking slides that offer a 90s edge, the fusion of rock stylings is a pleasure to listen to.

From the musical brain of Colin Schlitt, the single furthers his exploration of original records and completely DIY production. While he has recently turned to his own music, Schlitt has been a feature on the music scene as a member of other bands. When he is not creating music under this moniker or with El Radio Fantastique, he works as a teacher.

‘Foxy Friends’ strums to life with a wash of indie rock sensibilities. This almost hazy vibe meets the deep beats of the drums that push it forward. Throughout the melody, there is a light touch of distortion that creates an interesting edge to the track. It is like you are floating in a slightly psychedelic haze with the colours moving around you in negative. This creates a late-night feeling to the music like you are on the verge of being overly tired with thoughts rushing through your brain and not letting you sleep. Through all of this, there is a wonderful mixture of rock sensibilities. You can feel the touch of classic rock as the guitars start to soar halfway through the single, after being pushed along by indie rock vibes. This is all given a sheen of 90s garage rock that softens the entire movement. As you listen to the melody, you want to sit back and sink into the movement, while allowing the vocals to float across your brain.

Against the opening strum of the melody, Schlitt’s vocals carefully take your arm and lead you into a spiral of thoughts. There is an initial hit out against fake people who take advantage of others that turns into a deeper consideration of the world in general. There is a poetic flow to the lyrics that wonderfully matches the blend of rock styles in the melody. The overtired vibes of the music bolster the twirl of thoughts in the lyrics. The chorus is catchy while being somewhat understated and will stick in your brain for a really long time. By the end of the track, you are going to have a lot to think about and consider.

Peppermint Moon uses a fantastic blend of rock styles and sensibilities to pull you into some late-night contemplations and thoughts in ‘Foxy Friends’. There is an easy feeling to the melody that makes you want to sit back and relax into the movement. The vocals pick up the vibes of the music as they consider the world around us and leave you with a lot on your mind.
