Pegasuses – My Friend The Moon (2024)
Singing songs “…about the serious and the silly…making you confused about whether you should be laughing or crying…”, duo Pegasuses tackle reality, life experiences and human emotion with their music. The brainchild of husband-and-wife duo Dave Miatt and Laura Lamb, the pair have a unique indie-folk sound dragging vintage folk tones to contemporary folk audiences. This is my introduction to Pegasuses, but with each tune, I feel like I have known them forever; a sense of comfortable familiarity within new acquaintance-ness. Join me as I delve into their new release, ‘My Friend The Moon’.
Following the well-received singles ‘Patio’ and ‘Goodnight Ricky’, ‘My Friend The Moon’ is the title track of their new four-track EP. Recorded and produced by Russell Marsden, with mixing and mastering by Enrico Berto, ‘My Friend The Moon’ is a simplistic ballad featuring an acoustic guitar, strings and percussion. Soothing and mellifluous, the arrangement settles your soul as that song that you can play to make any difficult day a little less gloomy.
Despite being a guitar-driven tune, it is the vocals that stand tall as the prominent feature in ‘My Friend The Moon’. The harmonic combination of Lamb and Miatt’s rich voices offers a heart-warming rush of music; however, despite the charming smoothness of the song, there is a slight rawness lingering in the warm tune. Pegasuses describes ‘My Friend The Moon’ as “…a contemplative waltz about pottering about in the long nocturnal hours while the world sleeps…”
You know those songs that wriggle into your brain, rattle about and just don’t leave for hours or days to come? The one that you find yourself humming when washing the dishes? ‘My Friend The Moon’ is that song. Pegasuses is about to release its album Sea of Joy in 2025. Until the album arrives, I’ll have ‘My Friend The Moon’ on repeat; I highly recommend you do so as well.
