Paytron Saint – Mirror (2023)

Compared to the likes of Riding The Low and Guided By Voices, Paytron Saint is a four-piece rock group with an attitude of note. Formed in 2017, the UK-based band combine elements of grunge, indie-rock and alternative rock to form what they call “melodic indie grunge”. While this is my introduction to Paytron Saint, the lads are already turning heads with coverage from BBC Introducing, Radio Derby, Havoc Underground, YMX, Edgar Allan Poets, In Your Ears Music, and various playlists. The latest addition to their well-received discography is the single ‘Mirror’.

Beginning 2023 with a powerful blast of music, ‘Mirror’ follows their track ‘Possibly Honest’. Recorded at their own studio The Chicken Coop, built at the bottom of bassist Dean Lloyd’s garden, ‘Mirror’ is a hard-hitting single to be played at full volume in all its rock glory. A leaning toward the bold ruggedness of Nirvana is evident in ‘Mirror’, yet there is something more nostalgic than 90s grunge in Paytron Saint’s new single. For some reason, amidst the heavy guitars with pounding drums, a sliver of Nickelback with Three Days Grace brings a harder, coarser feel to ‘Mirror’.

While the melody tosses you into a sonic whirlpool with its grimy but kaleidoscopic swirl, it is Nick Glyn-Davies’ vocals that add something even more special to the group. The warmth of his vocals melds with a rugged grittiness to stick in your brain and send your soul soaring. The thing is, while the arrangement certainly has depth, it is the lyrical content of ‘Mirror’ that showcases Paytron Saint’s intimacy. The band explain that ‘Mirror’ is “a conversation between two brothers with very different lifestyles where one is asking the other to take a look at themselves”.

Slithering through your ear, rocking about your brain and sending chills down your spine, Paytron Saint release their passionate, reflective and sentimental single ‘Mirror’.
