Paul Maged – Everything’s Gonna Be Alright (2022)
Never one to step away from profound topics, veteran singer-songwriter Paul Maged’s music can inspire audiences with his reflective sound. Inspired by the likes of Paul McCartney, Billie Joe Armstrong and Bruce Springsteen (all artists who adapt to modern times without shying away from the truth), Maged aims to connect with people on an intimate, relevant level – and he does this. The latest addition to his well-received discography is the single ‘Everything’s Gonna Be Alright’.
A natural storyteller, Paul Maged’s songs are versatile, introspective and emotional stirring something in his listeners’ souls. The first single since his album Culture War (released in 2020), ‘Everything’s Gonna Be Alright’ is an emotionally charged look at dealing with the Covid-19 pandemic. Maged explains that he was emotionally spent after releasing Culture War but at the same time “…really started to reconnect to the energy of New York City. So many people wrote about the demise of NYC during the pandemic saying it would never come back the same but to me, it never left. Lyrically I wanted something that combined the romanticism and grittiness of NYC with feelings of positivity, love and gratefulness.”
Recorded with producer Dan Konopka, ‘Everything’s Gonna Be Alright’ is a fresh, upbeat song interlaced with groovy funk vibes. While there is a strong funk vibe to the song, Maged retains a rock-influenced design in the track – it probably adds to the grittiness of ‘Everything’s Gonna Be Alright’. Bringing the sounds of yesteryear to modern-day audiences, the track has a contemporary edge with a familiar but fresh sound.
The single is superbly layered with powerful guitars, drums and an interspersed piano, but it is Maged’s vocal execution that turned my head. A gruffness exists in the smooth tones showcasing his innovation, versatility and all-around natural talent. All in all, I think Paul Maged has a new fan and this new fan recommends him to everyone!
