Paul Babe – Love In A Wasteland (2020)
Are you looking for a new take on the idea of finding a light in the dark or at the end of the tunnel? Paul Babe has what you need with the hopeful alien invasion love story ‘Love In a Wasteland’. Chronicling the difficult but destined path of lovers in a post-apocalyptic dystopia, the single melds alt-pop with some cosmic RnB for an interesting take on love rising from the ashes of a world torn asunder.
The second single from the project started by multi-instrumentalist Seth Evans, it is also a lead-up to his debut full-length album. Drawing on the ethereal side of Bon Iver with a flawless falsetto and the expansive production styles of James Blake, Evans pulls you from the rubble and into the light.
‘Love in a Wasteland’ grabs your attention from the first second as the deep beats pound through you and set the post-apocalyptic vibes. There is a wavering feeling to the melody while the beats thump through you. The tones of the music have this airy vibe like light rushing across the landscape. The melody wonderfully combines some cosmic RnB vibes with an alt-pop soundscape. While the melody creates the desolate landscape, there is also a sense of something good coming from all the bad that has happened.
This sense is enhanced by the vocals and the lyrics. Evans’ performance is a flawless falsetto that is easy on the ears and adds a little something to the overall vibe of the music. His vocal delivery takes on a more grounded feeling later in the single when the music bursts from the floating vibes of the start. This is a great combination of sonic devices that propels you into the hope for the future and the love that rises from the ashes.
Paul Babe combines a cosmic soundscape with alt-pop sensibilities for a story of love rising from the ashes in ‘Love in a Wasteland’. The melody is captivating from the first moment as it sets the scene before propelling you into the vocals. The falsetto of the vocals is amazing and effortless as it draws you along the path of the lovers set out in the lyrics.
