Patrick Doval – Endless Heartbreak (2024)
If The Ramones had a kid with Soundgarden and it was raised by Iggy Pop, the chances are Patrick Doval would be that child. The younger brother of Axl Rose, there is a gruff edginess to Doval’s sound; however, amidst the gruff, there is a rich soothing slithering through the song. This is my introduction to the US-based singer-songwriter, but Doval is already turning heads internationally reaching far beyond his North American borders. The latest addition to his discography is the single ‘Endless Heartbreak’.
Returning to the music scene (or at least the streaming side of things) after two years, Doval released his single ‘Back Home’. A melding of 80s rock with trips of 90s alternative rock binding the melody, ‘Back Home’ transcends time with its nostalgic tone. ‘Endless Heartbreak’ follows ‘Back Home’, but instead of a fusion of 80s and 90s rock, it is a bold testament to the pop-rock tunes of the late 1990s. Interestingly, while the underlying breath of the track is pure pop-rock, Doval’s unique vocals tinge it with an unfathomable fusion of Iggy Pop and David Bowie.
Joined by The Offspring’s former drummer Pete Parada, ‘Endless Heartbreak’ whips listeners about in a whirl of pounding drums, soaring guitars and dynamic bass. Fluttering about in a harmonic twirl of sound kaleidoscopic music rushes across your face; however, as there is unity in the tune, there is also an off-kilter distortion. Perhaps this is a drag of distorted indie-rock drawn to 2024, but in my opinion, it is the sonic expression of miscommunication, heartbreak and melancholy vulnerability – the profound theme of ‘Endless Heartbreak’. Doval explains:
“Growing up, I was always getting heartbroken by girls I liked or had a crush on… ’Endless Heartbreak’ is a song about rejection… about falling in love or having a crush and getting brokenhearted… When you like someone and they don’t like you back and they try avoiding you. They might laugh at you, quickly walk away from you, play with your emotions and slowly break your heart.”
