Parris Mitchell – Shakespeare Cowboy (2024)

Known for his powerful vocals, relatable lyrics and energetic melodies, singer-songwriter Parris Mitchell is quickly becoming an established feature in the global pop music scene. From his single ‘bad place’ in 2020 to 2022’s ‘permanent+1’ and 2023’s ‘Easy Love’, the US-based artist is turning heads and garnering a larger following with each release. Described as anthemic, expressive, honest and raw, Mitchell ignites a passion for music in each of our hearts. The latest flame sparks from his new single ‘Shakespeare Cowboy’.

Following his well-received singles ‘Easy Love’ and ‘JAKKY BOY!’, ‘Shakespeare Cowboy’ is not only Mitchell’s second release in 2024 but also the second track off his upcoming LP The Mixed Emotions Arcade. Drawing together different flavours of pop, it is a shimmering fusion of old-school pop with indie-pop inclinations and a layer of pop-rock binding the tune in a golden ribbon.

For me, listening to the single is like being set off on a brightly coloured rainbow slipping and sliding in the kaleidoscopic colours. The bold guitars carry you along as Mitchell’s warm vocals hold you close navigating the rollercoaster ride. Smooth and gentle, ‘Shakespeare Cowboy’ is an easy pop tune; however, a deeper level of vulnerability exists in the tinges of pop-rock.

As part of the “diverse emotional journey” that is The Mixed Emotions Arcade, ‘Shakespeare Cowboy’ is an embodiment of frustration, anxiety and heartbreak. Despite the vibrancy of the flitting strands of sonic light, the intricate fragility of relationships stands tall. Interestingly, while the difficult side of unrequited love is evident, the heart-warming tune eagerly offers hopefulness and empowerment to see the light at the end of the tunnel. Mitchell explains:

“’Shakespeare Cowboy’ is my exploration into the heart of fleeting love and self-discovery… The song delves into the pain of unrequited love and the realisation that sometimes love is more about the idea of a person than the reality… it speaks to the longing for genuine connection and the journey towards self-worth beyond another’s affection. This track is a personal reflection on love’s complexities offering a message of empowerment and the courage to move forward.”
