Parham Gharavaisi – Fatal Wings (2024)

For just on five years, musician Parham Gharavaisi has entertained audiences with his hard-hitting blend of sound. From his debut single ‘Beacon’ to ‘Silent Assassin’, ‘404’, ‘Sea of Plastic’ and ‘Minesweeper’, the Iran-based artist flits from melodic metal to alternative rock and post-rock in his melodies. As an artist with no influences, his music is a result of “sounds that I personally enjoy”; however, slight similarities to artists like Marilyn Manson, Rammstein and Rob Zombie are evident.

As a hardcore gamer, many of his melodies are “as a tribute to video games…” Now I’m not a gamer at all, but the titles ‘Minesweeper’ and ‘Deathwish’ jump out as something even a “totally oblivious to games” individual can recognise. Following the metal single ‘Divided (I Have)’, Gharavaisi entices our ears with the latest addition to his discography – ‘Fatal Wings’.

Unlike ‘Divided (I Have)’, Gharavaisi infuses a soothing hint of hard rock within heavy metal in ‘Fatal Wings’. Recorded at his home studio, the single is brimming with hard-hitting guitars and a bold bass rushing about with a helter-skelter quality. Tossing you into a sonic hurricane, the thrashing instrumentation whips your head, kicks your feet and almost tears you apart in a metal-infused flood of excitement; however, just as the hard-hitting metal hits you, a lull into soothing alternative rock exists.

Almost like sitting in the eye of the storm, Gharavaisi cools things down with a creeping sense of calm… then it’s back to the insanity. Along with the collision of ferocious rage and gentle seas, Gharavaisi’s vocals flip from the vulnerable warmth of alternative rock tones to harsh screams in a swirl of metal. While this flip-flop of genres and styles is fascinating, there is a disconnect making you feel as if it were two songs rapidly pasted together… not in a bad way but in a “don’t get too comfortable” manner. I like it!
