Panic! At The Disco – This Is Gospel (2013)

Panic-at-the-Disco-This-Is-GospelAlthough I still associate Panic! At The Disco with my early teenage years, studded belts and ‘emo’ haircuts, I can’t help but get excited when I hear a new record from the group.  Unfortunately, their latest outing with ‘Miss Jackson’ didn’t quite cut it for me. Although the band has the creative ability to delve into different musical styles, I feel ‘Miss Jackson’ was lacking the true essence of Panic! The song feels as though the group were experimenting with music that didn’t fit their original style. Catchy, yes, but not true to form.

However, with the release of ‘This Is Gospel’ from the album Too Weird To Live, Too Rare To Die! I am definitely much more excited to have Panic! back in my life.  The song stays true to the classic Panic! formula and yet slots right in with the current pop trends in the charts at the moment.

‘This Is Gospel’ is a very confident comeback from the group. It’s a strong and self-assured record and stands head and shoulders above a lot of the singles currently topping the charts. There’s evidence of the lyrical intricacy mainly prominent throughout their earlier years. It’s something I’ve always admired Panic! for and makes their songs far more interesting to listen to – take note, Britney Spears!

The quirky use of auto tune in the opening immediately draws you straight into the song and then you’re hit with one of the strongest chorus’ since Biffy Clyro’s ‘Biblical.’ I sometimes worry that Panic! are far too similar to Fall Out Boy for comfort but this single definitely proves the band is able to stand on their own two feet with their own unique sound.

I can’t wait to hear what other sounds and styles Panic! At The Disco plans to play around with on the rest of the long-awaited album. If ‘This is Gospel’ is anything to go by, then it’s definitely going to be a strong fourth addition to their album collection. Too Weird To Live, Too Rare To Die is due for release on October 8th.
