P.M. Tiger – Catfish Motel (2022)

Described by The Strokes producer Gordan Raphael as “…superb…rock and roll as it’s meant to be done”, US-based P.M. Tiger have a raw, powerful and soul-soaring sound. On a mission to make listeners “comfortable being uncomfortable with the human experience”, the foursome is inspired by life in its entirety and, overall, human essence. Along with performances with notable acts like Plain White T’s, P.M. Tiger has released several successful singles since 2018, featured in various magazines, received airtime on international radios and playlists, and is ensnaring audiences’ senses on a global scale. The latest addition to their discography is ‘Catfish Motel’.

Following their full-length album MY LOVE MUSiC, P.M. Tiger’s ‘Catfish Motel’ is an indie-rock track slathered with old-school funk vibes. Inspired by Earth, Wind and Fire, Cage The Elephant, The Strokes, and Vampire Weekend, there is a familiar but fresh tone to P.M. Tiger. In ‘Catfish Motel’, in particular, there are strong funk-inspired vocals with a melodic arrangement of pounding drums and a really smooth underlying guitar. As Raphael said it’s “rock and roll as it’s meant to be done.”

Described as “synthy indie-rock that sounds like a hurricane blowing through a loose collaboration of Vampire Weekend, Arctic Monkeys and MGMT…”, one would expect ‘Catfish Motel’ to be hard-hitting and a little overwhelming; however, this is not the case. Sure, there is a sense of grunge to the single, but it is a smooth, flowing, rhythmic and harmonic song that will have you grinning from ear to ear. The groovy beats are elegantly enhanced by the bold lead vocals making for a rich, chilled and anthemic experience. I don’t know if the members of Earth, Wind and Fire will hear ‘Catfish Motel’ but I bet they’d be damned impressed with P.M. Tiger’s nostalgic flair and grasp of funk-rock at its best.
