Owen Kennedy – Gorgeous Grey (2022)
Influenced by a diverse range of artists from Janis Joplin to Rufus Wainwright and David Bowie, UK-based Owen Kennedy brings originality, uniqueness and beauty into rock music. An emerging artist from London, Kennedy is a newbie in the music scene; however, his cabaret sound fusing jazz and indie-rock with nods to classical tones makes him a stand-out character. Releasing his first EP in 2021, Kennedy is already turning heads on an international scale with features on CLOUT, Divide & Conquer, Bored City and numerous playlists. The latest addition to his discography is the single ‘Gorgeous Grey’.
Described by Divide & Conquer as having “…crafted a deliberately madcap oeuvre…”, Owen Kennedy is something new, exciting and intriguingly obscure. Following his debut EP Mr Free (released in 2021), Kennedy adopts a melancholic sound in ‘Gorgeous Grey’. While there is a modern-day rock edginess to the single, a strong David Bowie art-rock influence is heard in the song. Moreover, Kennedy taps into Bowie with his obscure vocals, cinematic soundscape, and off-centre arrangement in ‘Gorgeous Grey’.
Kennedy notes that ‘Gorgeous Grey’ was meant to be placed on Mr Free, but the song release was delayed so he could develop a live sound – one that is heard in the cabaret rock opera vibes through the track. Melding his rich vocals with a kaleidoscopic sonic tapestry of guitars, piano and drums, ‘Gorgeous Grey’ is a timeless piece of musical mastery. Personally, I believe the release of ‘Gorgeous Grey’ is more evocative and provocative as you gain a real sense of the organised chaos in Kennedy’s eclectic music.
Sincere, sentimental and moving, Kennedy brings a contemporary spin to old-school rock with his new single ‘Gorgeous Grey’. Owen Kennedy is an emerging artist, but I doubt he will be unknown for very long – his skill needs to be shared and heard by everyone!
