Ormiston – Step From The Limelight (2021)

The brainchild of Canadian singer-songwriter Nicola Ormiston, Ormiston is a fusion of disco and indie-pop. Coming from a bilingual family, this talented artist draws from two separate cultures to create an explosive listening experience. While he only started releasing music this year, Ormiston is turning heads across the globe gaining coverage from The Rodeo, When The Horn Blows, Turtle Tempo, RGM and Clout (to name but a few). The latest addition to his critically acclaimed discography is the single ‘Step From The Limelight’.

Following his debut single ‘Rebel’ (read our review here), ‘Step From The Limelight’ sees Ormiston wearing his heart on his sleeve once again. Using a personal narrative, he takes us into the realm of self-doubt, anxiety and angst within life’s disconcerting monotony. Fully aware of the proverbial rat race, Ormiston highlights the frustration felt by people facing the daily grind. Yet, while his hushed tones enhance the desperation of the situation, there is a lingering sense of empowerment forcing us to refuse society’s mundane expectations.

Yes, the bold vocals certainly highlight the vulnerability of the protagonist, however, it is the harmonic melody that brings a sense of innocence to ‘Step From The Limelight’. Dashing back to the 80s, this pop masterpiece is filled with steady drums and explosive guitars. With a mild similarity to Depeche Mode, Ormiston weaves a shimmering tapestry of rich sounds and poetic lyrics. We are only two tracks into his career and I already can’t wait for the next song!

Side note: Ormiston is set to release his debut album Hammer Down in June 2021.
