One Flew Over – Last Man Standing (2024)
The twin sister of singer-songwriter Hozier (not literally, of course), County Meath duo One Flew Over captures the broody huskiness of Hozier’s rock music; however, being an individual, One Flew Over stands tall with a sliver of metal, RnB and soul rushing in the mix. Perhaps it’s an Irish thing, the whole haunting vulnerability set within a hard-hitting tune – an overflow of Irish charm wrapped in tragic emotions. All I know is Irene Ni Chuinn and Martin Quinn can turn heads with their intoxicating clasp of soul-stirring music.
While One Flew Over formed in 2019, the veteran musicians were by no means taking first steps into the music industry. A kaleidoscopic combination of singer-songwriter Irene Ni Chuinn and touring multi-instrumentalist Martin Quinn, One Flew Over is a diverse shot of sound pushing the boundaries of modern rock. Following their critically acclaimed singles ‘Maybe In Another Lifetime’ and ‘Not Good For Me’, the pair stride into 2024 with the single ‘Last Man Standing’.
Just as ‘Not Good For Me’ shifted from ‘Maybe In Another Lifetime’s gentle indie-folk/soul melody to a harder pop-rock, ‘Last Man Standing’ layers another heavier, hard-hitting tone in the tune. Recorded and produced by Martin Quinn at JAM Studios in Kells, Co. Meath, ‘Last Man Standing’ crashes with a hard rock fervour flecked with sprinkles of soulful classic rock and blues.
Immediately pushing you headfirst into a sonic hurricane, you are recklessly tossed about by an ever-growing pound of hard rock. Andrew Quinn’s crashing drums hit you from one side, while Martin Quinn’s bass and guitars rattle your bones, a slip of James Quinn’s organ sneaks from the side creeping in quickly with a dash of David Doyle’s cello. As Ni Chuinn’s forceful vocals wrap around you, wriggling into your brain and coursing through your veins, insanity ensues, however, a harmonic unity binds the rock symphony.
I find it intriguing that while the kick of this hard rock anthem can overwhelm you, it is a tribute to strength, tenacity and endurance. One Flew Over explain:
