Onbar – CHANCE (2023)

Caffeine has become essential to daily functioning so it makes perfect sense that some of the best ideas hit you when filled to the hilt with coffee – Onbar is merely evidence of this fact. The brainchild of US-based Troy Tuan Truong, Onbar emerged when Truong was working at a coffee shop making the espressos (known as being “on bar”). Realising it would be an awesome stage name, Onbar began singing and dancing during shifts with everyone vibing to it. The latest addition to his well-received discography is the single ‘CHANCE’.

Collaborating with co-writers and music professionals Orion Song (vocals) and Patrick Hizon (producer), Onbar finds the delicate line between pop, RnB, and hip hop with sprinkles of soul. Following his electropop single ‘GOOD’, Onbar blasts into 2023 with ‘CHANCE’. Not as high-paced as ‘GOOD’, ‘CHANCE’ adopts a soothing pop ballad style tinged with electropop beats. Melding Truong’s gentle vocals with the richness of Orion Song’s dulcet tones, there is a Justin Bieber meets Justin Timberlake quality to the single.

Bright, fun and jovial, ‘CHANCE’ has an optimistic and positive lilt to it. Yet, while it is a heartfelt love song, there is an underlying sensuality prompting a sense of vulnerability in the single. Onbar explains that “…my friends and I collaborated on an idea which explores one falling in love even though they’ve been hurt in the past.” An elegant and sophisticated exposition of human fragility, ‘CHANCE’ catches your breath while the lads give a cheeky wink.

Sincere, sentimental, elegant and a bit naughty, Onbar’s new single can intoxicate listeners from the first chord. It might be a terrible pun but taking a chance on ‘CHANCE’ is something I would highly recommend.
