Old Friends – Having Yourself A Day (2024)
One of my favourite places is sitting with good friends, sharing a cup of tea and biscuits, playing music in the background and having a good natter. When listening to the US rock band Old Friends, it feels like I’m chilling with old friends and Old Friends. Bad pun, I know, but it’s the truth.
So, who are Old Friends? Hailing from the States, they are Southern New Jersey’s match to Queens of the Stone Age. Establishing themselves on the local scene with energetic, confident stage performances, the lads capture hearts and minds with a powerful blast of energy. While the live shows garner a large following, the lads reach far beyond their US borders to the UK, Germany, France, Portugal, Australia, Brazil and India – to name a few. With over 5 years of experience in the industry, their sound has become more mature and sophisticated; however, a hint of raw youthfulness continues to play in each tune.
We interviewed Old Friends in 2021 discussing their album Coming of Age, but since then some changes have been made contributing to an evolution in their style and sound. With the recent addition of Aaron Aitken (bass) and Luke Chizek (drums), vocalist and frontman Nick Noto introduces heavier grunge influences into their hard rock-tinged melodies. The latest addition to their discography is the single ‘Having Yourself A Day’.
Following the 2023 single ‘Dog Breath’, ‘Having Yourself A Day’ is a tribute to those high-energy moments of pure bliss when your soul soars and your heart sings. A forceful rush of pounding drums, scorching guitars and gritty vocals, the bold two-and-a-half minutes of rock rush past your ears and toss you about carelessly…although it’s a good tossing about. Kaleidoscopic streams of light drop from the sky with each chord, and Noto’s powerful voice seems to hug you in a “let’s jump up and down ‘cause it’s too awesome not to” manner.
Living in an uncertain world, brief glimpses of true happiness don’t come around all the time. Old Friends’ ‘Having Yourself A Day’ gives you a glimpse of pure, untouched delight – it’s something you won’t forget any time soon.
