of all living things – If I’m Honest (2024)

Being a massive fan of the slowcore movement, Dublin four-piece of all living things is a band that I am so happy to have been introduced to. Flying the melancholy flag of introspection, their new single ‘If I’m Honest’ is three minutes of atmospheric beauty.

From the haunting opening line “I try my very best”, they had me. With vocals Hope Sandoval would be proud of flowing through the track and using powerful guitar riffs to elevate this beautiful piece even further was a stroke of genius. I could definitely hear influences from my all-time favourite band, Scottish post-rock legends Mogwai in the track’s structure. This is a song to get lost in and it impressed me with how it, in a way, forces you to indulge in a kind of forced mindfulness exercise. Honestly, this is not an easy thing to do in such a short amount of time.

You can tell ‘If I’m Honest’ was written in the depths of winter, it has the feeling of cold darkness but a warm glow at the core; the warm glow of hope we all have in the depths of winter that just around the corner the world will come back to life as spring bursts through the darkness.

Now, if I can be honest, having been on a Mazzy Star kick over the last month, of all living things are certainly the band I’ve been waiting for this year. A new band with a fresh sound that is also weirdly nostalgic and comforting. I cannot wait to hear more from them in the coming months and here’s hoping for a UK tour.
