Occupation Baby – Lights (2024)
Blending elements of synths, pop and even a bit of indie-rock, singer-songwriter Occupation Baby pushes the boundaries of pop music with his eclectic concoctions. Hailing from the UK, Occupation Baby looks to the future of music instead of stalling behind in a sometimes-stagnating pop music scene. With only a few singles to his name – according to Spotify – the Cambridgeshire artist might appear a newbie in the industry pool of pebbles but, like so many wonderful things, he shines bright as an intriguing gem. The latest addition to his discography is the single ‘Lights’.
Following his 2022 single ‘Scissors’, ‘Lights’ is Occupation Baby’s re-emergence on the scene. Showcasing an evolution in his sound, ‘Lights’ leans further toward an indie-pop sound interwoven with powerful synths in a cinematic soundscape. One might consider a hit of 80s synth-pop twinkling within the wistful, whimsical attitude; however, some rock sensibilities cling to the melodic wrapper.
I find many things about ‘Lights’ and Occupation Baby intriguing, but the infusion of raw energy and passion within a sophisticated production highlights his innovation not only as a musician but a composer and producer. Moreover, the mystical sound captures both a heartfelt contentment and desperate yearning.
His previous track, ‘Scissors’ touched on unrequited love and ‘Lights’ focuses on “submitting to your feelings and being content…” Yet, I hear both in the intimate melody. Perhaps it is acceptance of not being in love with a powerful sense of freedom, or the discovery of true love and being lost in its tragic beauty. All I know is that Occupation Baby expertly expresses self-discovery in this mysterious masterpiece.
In addition to the single, Occupation Baby released an official music video for ‘Lights’. You can view the video below or on their YouTube channel. Please note that this video uses lighting effects that can trigger seizures in people with photosensitive epilepsy. Viewer discretion is advised.
