NYRE – You Didn’t Mean It (2024)

As with pioneer pop artist Billie Eilish, singer-songwriter NYRE is establishing herself as one of the more intriguing, boundary-breaking trailblazers in the alternative/dark pop music scene. The difference between the two? NYRE hails from Canada and is largely inspired by UK-born Eilish – although I won’t be surprised if Eilish will find inspiration in NYRE’s work. Slicking various flavours of pop together in a raw cage of darkness, NYRE immerses listeners in a haunting experience, but a good haunting experience. Known for her engaging narratives, moving melodies and way of creating vivid soundscapes, the “dark pop princess” is gaining critical acclaim far beyond her Canadian borders.

When we left NYRE, she enthralled us with her 2023 single ‘Glitter With A Vengeance’ – just from the title you can tell what sort of hard-hitting, in your face, ‘mush together pop so you don’t know what’s going on’ song it is. Interestingly, while it sounds like a smash of hardcore music, ‘Glitter With A Vengeance’ is decadent with an uplifting optimism rushing in the theme. Come with us as we delve into her latest single ‘You Didn’t Mean It’.

NYRE’s first step into 2024, ‘You Didn’t Mean It’ is summer-ready and eager to intoxicate listeners. Leaning toward an electropop tone, the single is brimming with bold beats belied by twinkling synths creating a haunting ambience. The thing is, while the synth-filled mood is caressing, the electronic beats simultaneously contribute to the soothing and slice with pulsating force.

Known for her intimate lyricism and resonating narratives, NYRE draws on deep emotions in her new single. Reflecting on “memories of past lovers”, the song delicately taps into nostalgic fragility poignantly exploring the “not-so-great” times. Do not fear, NYRE is here to hold you above the anxiety and showcase the confidence and strength that developed from those experiences. She explains:

“This song is a powerful testament to self-discovery and empowerment… the introspective journey of recognising one’s own strength and worth….”
