Noosh – Bury It (2023)
From York Calling to The Wild Is Calling and Mesmerized, new singer-songwriter Noosh is already turning heads far beyond her North American borders. Described as passionate, stunning, and infectious, Noosh fuses elements of electropop and indie pop in a darker sonic package. Come with us as we delve into her musical world with her debut single ‘Bury It’.
Lying somewhere between Ariana Grande, Lorde, Delores O’Riordan and Amanda Palmer, but with an intimate obscurity that is hardly comparable to anyone, Noosh brings a noise that is refreshing but a little eerie. Haunting and ethereal, her mystical vocals sliver through the darker melody harmonically combining a creepy voice with disconcerting instrumentation. Recorded and produced by Noosh, although the final mixing was done by Dominic Romano, ‘Bury It’ slithers into your brain and captures your soul with its inimitable tone.
What I find intriguing is how sophisticated the rawness of the single is. Does that make sense? In ‘Bury It’, Noosh presents a naïve, immature and wistful barebones depth but within an elegant, albeit a little discomforting, melody. It is this line between harsh reality and whimsical sentimentality that highlights her depth as an artist.
While the melody can hold its own, keeping you captivated, it is the lyrical content that truly encapsulates the theme of ‘Bury It’. Noosh explains that she “…grew up in a purity culture and learned to stake much of my self-worth in that standard, which led to nearly lethal self-loathing and shame when that line was crossed” – ‘Bury It’ screams the angst, fear, frustration and semi-sweet nostalgia of this crossed line. As she shares, “…some topics just bleed lyrics.”
Sincere, sentimental, sensitive, and passionate, listening to Noosh’s ‘Bury It’ is like heading off on a sonic acid trip but without the acid. I cannot wait to hear what else she has up her sleeve.
