No Drinks for Jimmy – Walk Away (2021)

There are times when relationships come to the end of the road and there is little you can do about it. No Drinks for Jimmy have picked up on these moments and turned them into the engaging rock song ‘Walk Away’. Through the single, they realise the relationship is at an end while one party is still willing to do what they can to keep it going. This drive to fix things is tempered by the knowledge that it might be best to simply walk away.

This look at the death of a relationship comes from Dan Wilson (bass), Doug Wilson (drums) Kurt Lobdell (vocals) and Joe Chichetti (guitar). The band started as a way for the Wilson brothers to play music together with Lobdell being a part of it from the start. Chichetti joined the trio in 2003 and they have been releasing original music since 2015.

‘Walk Away’ uses a layered opening to grab your attention. There are rippling guitar tones that undulate over the deep thrumming bass. When the drum enters it rolls you down the soundscape while getting your foot tapping to the rhythm. There is a depth to the melody that is wonderful to listen to. On the chorus, the melody rises to crest over your senses and bolsters the realisation in the lyrics and vocals.

Lobdell’s vocals effortlessly draw you into the tale of the lyrics. His emotive performance fills you with the dawning of understanding. His performance has a touch of sadness over the end of the relationship woven around a yearning to do more to salvage it. This all comes to a head on the chorus as you feel the breaking of the knowledge that it is in everyone’s best interest to walk away. In the latter parts of the track, there is a moment of darkness before you rise for the closing of the song.

No Drinks for Jimmy bring an understanding of the natural end of a relationship and the knowledge that you just need to ‘Walk Away’. The understanding in the single has a contrasting feeling as you want to salvage the relationship while knowing that you can’t. This is all set to an engaging melody that crests on the chorus to drive the emotions of the lyrics home.
