Night Hymns – Drink To Me (2024)

Sitting around and strumming on the guitar, singer-songwriter Wei drifts from jovial optimism to dark despair in his creative expression of life. Life as we know it, life as we don’t know it, and life beyond that we are yet to experience; all in a mish-mash blend of Britpop, indie rock and pop rock. This is my introduction to Night Hymns, but he quickly caught the attention of publications, radio stations, playlist curators, and intrigued listeners across the globe. From France and Portugal to the UK and the USA, London-based Night Hymns is a rambunctious forerunner in the rock music scene. The latest addition to his discography is the single ‘Drink To Me’.

While Night Hymns leans toward a strong Britpop flavour in his melodies, ‘Drink To Me’ illustrates a melding of Britpop with slicks of rock. Unlike ‘Blue Bottle’ and ‘Desert Song’ which had a prominent sound, ‘Drink To Me’ immerses the listener in vintage rock, punk, power pop and grunge draped in a Britpop comforter. Lying somewhere between The Kinks, Blur, The Ting Tings and Oasis, a unique melody emboldened by Night Hymn’s confident musicality springs forth.

I find it intriguing that the guitar-driven track has a simplistic nature but with a kaleidoscopic flair. Moreover, while a barebones lead guitar navigates the musical journey, Night Hymns’ warm vocals bind the composition in a charming wrapper. The draw toward an English accent enhances Britpop vibes and, for me, is a cheeky wink at the overall theme – dark deeds with a sassy fantasy twist.

A fantastical tale of macabre debauchery in a Brit-rock pool, ‘Drink To Me’ was “inspired by a vampire getting drunk from drinking blood. The lyricism pulls from the world of fanged horror, calling to mind snapshots at twilight of panicked prey and predators not far behind”. So, why does the English inflexion stab cheekily at this; well, the streets of London seem a perfect setting for such an amusing yet dark journey.

So, what is my overall opinion of Night Hymns and ‘Drink To Me’? Enticing and engaging, Night Hymns captivates your imagination and intoxicates listeners with complete elegance (and a bit of a cheeky grin). Highly recommended for giggles, grins and tons of fun.
