Nick Noon – A Jejune Affair (2023)

Known for his engaging, enthusiastic and overwhelmingly awesome sound, US-based Nick Noon has been referred to as “artistic genius” (Artisti Online), “…oozing a glorious energy that captivates you” (Find No Enemy), “a modern rock marvel” (We Write About Music), and “…music that will leave you speechless” (Sinusoidal Music) – and that’s just some of the reviews. Inspired by life in its entirety, this talented singer-songwriter aims to connect with audiences on a joyful but also vulnerable level. The latest addition to his well-received discography is his EP A Jejune Affair.

Following his single ‘Bring Out The Sunshine’, A Jejune Affair is Nick Noon’s first release of 2023 and he is beginning with a bang! Filled with high-energy songs, the four-track EP showcases Noon’s innovativeness and versatility. A diverse compilation of tracks, Noon drags us back to the sounds of yesteryear invoking the ghosts of rock music past. In the opening track ‘Costumes’, we hear a tinge of old-school Oasis fusing with the heaviness of Ash. Next, Noon embodies Coldplay with hints of Travis before dipping into the Beatles with his singles ‘When The Chariot Calls’ and ‘Bring Out The Sunshine’.

Alright, a lot of comparisons have been made thus far in this review, but what I find intriguing about Nick Noon is how his retro vibes are interwoven in a contemporary indie-rock stance. Slight leanings toward Tom Odell can be heard throughout, particularly in ‘When The Chariot Calls’ and ‘Grant Me Speed’ – perhaps this is because of Noon’s obscure vocals and piano playing. Yet, despite the reminiscence of other artists, Nick Noon is quickly creating a sound that is entirely and purely Nick Noon.

Recorded and produced in collaboration with Brian Lucey (The Black Keys, Liam Gallagher, Arctic Monkeys), A Jejune Affair is a masterful piece of eclectic music. The thing is, while the elegant arrangements of guitars, strings, piano and Noon’s rough vocals capture your heart, it is his lyricism that oozes intimacy. Passionate and powerful, each of the tracks is introspective, insightful, reflective and emotionally uplifting. With his lyricism being compared to Hank Williams and Leonard Cohen, we can be certain there is a poetic vulnerability in Noon’s work. Yet, as I mentioned earlier, the comparisons can be made but Noon is forming a complete sound that is entirely original.
