Nicholas Rowe – Lake Michigan (2020)

Hailing from Columbus, Ohio, Nicholas Rowe is an indie alt-folk artist. He is a self-proclaimed narcissist crippled with self-doubt who started out as a rocker. The change in musical direction came after heading Bob Dylan’s masterpiece ‘Blood On The Tracks’.

Since this change, he has gained attention with his 2017 EP Everything Has Beauty. His brooding style is on full display with his newest EP Five Things released in May 2020. The first single from the EP is the ballad ‘Lake Michigan’ that tells the story of a relationship on the verge of collapse.

‘Lake Michigan’ has a very soft stripped back opening with only a drum and gentle guitar. It leads perfectly into Rowe’s smooth and brooding vocals. The song has a sadness to it that shines through the music, vocals and lyrics.

While the song is sad, you can easily listen to it again and again. The accompanying music video is a stylized mixture of animation and live-action that captures the tone of the song perfectly. The raw emotions of the vocals and Rowe’s performance in the video tug on your heartstrings.

Nicholas Rowe brings his brooding vocals and raw emotion to life with ‘Lake Michigan’. This folk ballad is accompanied by a simple video mixing live-action and animation.
