Nia Fisher – Signal in the Noise (2024)
Before she even hit double-digits as a child, Nia Fisher had a taste for music. She began writing songs at age 9 and taught herself to play the piano. A passionate fire for melodies burned in her breast (not literally, of course) and she followed a career in musical theatre. After a shocking diagnosis of Premature Ovarian Insufficiency in 2010, Fisher began pondering life and chose to move away from theatre focusing on her music – the burning embers of her fiery passion reignited. Today we look at Nia Fisher the musician with her latest single ‘Signal in the Noise’.
Following her single ‘New Year’, ‘Signal in the Noise’ retains the soothing flow of Nia Fisher’s sound; however, as with her previous tracks, the new song showcases another facet of Fisher’s style. Soft and tender, her delicate vocals intertwine with the clear piano, all layered in a pop-esque ballad. Yet, just as you find yourself drifting along a mellifluous sonic river, Fisher turns the tables with a hard-hitting wash of indie-pop. Joined by producer Tim Hamill, ‘Signal in the Noise’ showcases the sophistication of a well-versed professional doing what he does best, however, vulnerability oozes from the rollercoaster ride oscillating from smooth elegance to breath-taking tumultuousness. Confident but fragile, dark but filled with bright lights, nervous and haunting but with underlying empowerment, each note of ‘Signal in the Noise’ brings a separate emotion, thought and element to our ears.
Just as the melody is all-encompassing, so are the lyrics. Penned with singer-songwriter Steve Balsamo, the words are poetic carrying as much weight and poignancy as the tune; in fact, the lyrics might be what makes ‘Signal in the Noise’ so profound. Nia Fisher explains:
“It’s a powerful message of hope and a reminder that each of us holds that power within. Life’s noise can become amplified in a myriad of ways not least via the media. What is the signal we’re waiting for, is it that quiet voice within?”
Bursting with soul-stirring sounds and insightful words, ‘Signal in the Noise’ rattles about your brain, slithers down your spine and takes your breath away. If this track is anything to go by, I cannot wait for more from the insatiable Nia Fisher.
