New Plague Radio – I’m Coming Back To Haunt You (2022)

From the funky vibes of Stevie Wonder to the chaos of the Beastie Boys and the grungy despair of Radiohead, New Plague Radio incorporates their various influences into a unique, eclectic pounding of music. What began as a request for singer-songwriter Donovan Wolfington to organise rapper Chief Redeye’s 2019 album release show snowballed into the US-based New Plague Radio. Wolfington reached out to musician Devin Taylor and soon all three were bonding over a love of horror films, which led to writing songs between rehearsals. Featured on A&R Factory, Gas Mask Magazine and We Write About Music, the threesome is reaching audiences beyond their North American borders.

Following their well-received single ‘Teeth’, ‘I’m Coming Back To Haunt You’ is a hard-hitting collision of rap, hip hop, hard rock and funk. I could compare the rapping to Eminem or Beastie Boys, and I could compare the rock instrumentation as a merging of Fall Out Boy and Billy Talent; however, this isn’t fair to New Plague Radio. Creating a sound that is completely inimitable and original, the trio’s sound is purely New Plague Radio – intoxicating and overwhelmingly awesome.

Using a DIY approach to create music, the lads record and self-produce their rip-roaring melodies. Recorded in their apartment, mixed by Donovan Wolfington and mastered by Machine of Gym Class Heroes, ‘I’m Coming Back To Haunt You’ has a rugged and raw quality. Yet, while there is a roughness to the track, an elegant sophistication exists in the arrangement showcasing the group’s maturity, innovation and versatility as artists.

Heart-stopping from the first breath, Chief Redeye stamps the song with his bold vocal execution. However, as brash and vivacious as Chief Redeye is, Wolfington (guitar and vocals) and Taylor (bass) bring up the beats with their harmonic melding of pop-punk and hard rock. Interestingly enough, while the band has harmonic moments in the single, the overall effect of ‘I’m Coming Back To Haunt You’ is that of division. You are tossed about in a chaotic frenzy of hip-hop, funk and rock, all tugging at you with enthusiastic gusto. What I love is how the confusion is actually organised chaos driven by New Plague Radio…and you love every second!
