Nelson Sobral – Twice The Price (2023)

In an interview with Hometown Country, singer-songwriter Nelson Sobral shared that “…music is the guiding light to all that I do…this is just what I am and what I do…”, and man are we glad he is following that light. Proving he is not to be pigeonholed, Sobral’s distinctive gruff vocals traipse genres like blues, country, Americana, folk and rock – and that’s just in one song. This is my introduction to the Canadian artist, but he is already establishing himself as a force within the Canadian music scene. Sharing the stage with the likes of The Trews, David Wilcox, Midnight Vesta, and Jeff Healy, his confident presence connects with audiences wherever he goes. The latest addition to his discography is the single ‘Twice The Price’.

Following his well-received ten-track album Second Arrow, ‘Twice The Price’ brings audiences an infectious brand of Americana. The first release in 2023, Nelson Sobral blasts into the year with an electric rock song. Yet, as I mentioned above, Sobral is not to be categorised and he shows this in ‘Twice The Price’. While the bold drums match a classic rock guitar, a blues-inspired guitar solo slithers through the melody adding something extra to the track.

Heartfelt and toe-tapping, ‘Twice The Price’ has an upbeat tune to have you on the dancefloor; however, it is the theme that adds a thought-provoking aspect to the song. Just as jovial and fun as the melody, Sobral touches on issues of freedom, self-empowerment and following a dream.

“In essence, it means to do what you love and to continue doing it no matter what. No matter what anyone’s idea is regarding success, you should always follow your passions because living a life not doing so is way worse than having success in some other endeavour just to make a living…” – Nelson Sobral on ‘Twice The Price’

Contained in an Americana package, ‘Twice The Price’ is a bold statement of living the way you want to and pursuing your dreams. As I mentioned, this is my introduction to Nelson Sobral, and I am so pleased he passed my virtual desk. I highly recommend Sobral to every person reading this review, as well as those who just skimmed it looking for something extraordinary.
