Nelda – In-Between Two Worlds (2024)
Voluntary displacement is a topic that you don’t find a lot of songs about. This is what makes ‘In Between Two Worlds’, the concept album by Nelda, so unique. The upcoming album uses themes found during interviews with foreign songwriters based in London and the songs are co-written with each songwriter interviewed.
The title track ‘In-Between Two Worlds’ is the one that started it all and was born from a morning pages writing exercise. One of only two solo tracks from the album, it is a great glimpse into the entire concept and the musical world that Nelda is able to create.
The opening piano notes have an old-school jazzy feeling to them. You will feel transported into a world of hazy colours and smoky smoothness. Resting under the jazzy piano is a light toe-tapping beat that seems to dance along the lights of the melody. It is a gentle dance that gets you into the perfect frame of mind to take in the lyrics. It is a very sophisticated melody that highlights the musicality of Nelda without overpowering the feelings and deeper meaning of the track. The piano solo that hits later in the track is a perfect pause that takes you higher into the air while giving you the moment you need for the meaning of the song to sink in.
Flowing out of the piano notes are Nelda’s vocals. Her performance continues the jazzy vibes of the melody, but there is the lightest hint of pop resting deep in her powerful performance. The lyrics are a tale of discovering the two worlds that are created by voluntary displacement. It is a perfect introduction to the overriding theme of the concept album as she opens your eyes to the reality of being between these two worlds. The idea of caring for both worlds while also being torn between them is very delicately handled making a topic that can be seen as divisive more approachable.
With the title track of her upcoming concept album, Nelda gently turns your attention to the idea of living between two worlds and the troubles this can bring. The jazzy tones of the track are a light dance that draws you in while her vocal performance is a delicate yet sophisticated introduction to the topic. It is definitely a song that makes you want to hear what the rest of the album has to offer in both musicality and theme.
