Near Death Experience (NDX) – Living (2022)

With their extremely engaging sound, Near Death Experience (NDX) has been catching us in their musical web again and again. they are now turning their groovy sound into a summer sizzler through the heat of ‘Living’. As they bring a soaring heat to our senses, they have us swinging from fever-pitch heights to broody depths as they weave a tale of the uncertainty of living and loving when the heat is on. Adding a touch of retro tones, they infuse 60s soul into the power of their groovy rock sound.

The ups and downs of the track are not limited to the arrangement of the single, but the swing from electric to acoustic instrumentation. Driving verses and reflective choruses finish the rollercoaster ride of the track that will leave you feeling like you have run a marathon while still wanting to go further. If their previous releases haven’t hooked you to their sound already, this blast of summer heat definitely will.

‘Living’ hits you with some lively retro sounds from the first moment. There is a burst of sound that shakes through your bones and gets your muscles moving about to the bright energy. You can feel the soring touches in the melody across the verses that bring a warm sunny vibe to your heart. The shiver of the tambourine and the roll of the drums add the retro sprinkle to the grooving vibes of the guitars. While the track’s first half is packed with bright colours and the yellow sheen of sunlight, the second half of the melody swings into darker tones. The movement from acoustic to electric is fantastic and handled wonderfully as the guitar soars with this trail of darkness descending behind it. The music takes on a heavier rock sound in the second half, but those lighter tones from the first half make a comeback later in the track to merge with the darkness.

The swing of the single is not limited to the melody as the vocals open with a wonderfully retro almost folk-rock vibe. Through the lyrics, the performance takes you to a sun-strewn meadow where the wind ruffles your hair and you have no worries. The happiness of carefree summer days shines through the performance and you are filled with the power of love. As the music changes, the vocals also gain a darker edge as a roughness scratches over the surface. There is a bubble of uncertainty, anxiety and something that hints toward obsession that comes through as the single progresses. It is a wonderful display of vocal versatility that merges wonderfully with the music.

Warm, happy, dark and uncertain are some of the extremes that Near Death Experience (NDX) takes us to with the swinging tones of ‘Living’ that bubble with love and a hint of obsession. Both the melody and vocals open the track with a retro lightness invoking feelings of summer heat and sunny meadows. This turns halfway through for a darker heavy rock take as the vocals growl and the guitars soar.
