ndge – Why Would I Notice U (2023)

Described as “…driving the electronic-pop genre forward in 2023…” (FV Music Blog) and “…a very eclectic artist who produces music out of the ordinary” (Edgar Allen Poets), UK-based musician ndge is anything but pedestrian. Operating in a vision of music and style termed “ndgetopia”, this unique singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist expresses freedom and individuality through their melodies. Despite having only two songs to their name, including the single we’re about to review, ndge is turning heads far beyond their UK borders with features on numerous publications and playlists.

Following their well-received debut single ‘Funk You’, ndge releases the track ‘Why Would I Notice U’. Unlike ‘Funk You’ which adopts a funk-pop tone, this sophomore single leans toward the more electronic side of pop. Filled with strong synths and beats, the bouncy joviality of electropop exists; however, the intensity of hip-hop and rap can be heard in the catchy choruses. Remaining true to the fact that ndge is multi-faceted in their melodies, a sliver of rock can be felt through bold, powerful and hard-hitting guitar riffs. Just a sliver, then we fall back into an electropop meets rap flavour of sound.

Self-recorded and produced (with mastering by James Auwarter), ‘Why Would I Notice U’ is a subtle punch in the guts wrapped in a pretty pink sonic wrapper. Interestingly, that melodic shove perfectly aligns with the theme of the single. A tribute to the heart-stopping moment when something happens that you weren’t expecting, like falling in love at first sight or going through a near-death experience, ndge perfectly captures the instantaneous BAM of “Oh hell, what was that”.

Completely unique and inimitable, ndge is a mystical masterful music maker and I am eager to hear more from them.

In addition to the single, ndge released an official music video for ‘Why Would I Notice U’. You can view the video on ndge’s YouTube channel.
